IDC has released it’s predictions and they peg Windows Phone as the market leader come 2015. But first, the hear and now. The entire smartphone market grew 49.2% in 2011, with a total of 450 million smartphones shipped, which is up from last year’s 303.4 million. They claim that iOS will take 15.7% of market share in 2011, which is third place behind Android’s 39.5% and Symbian’s 20.9%.
Now, here is where this report get’s sketchy. They claim that by 2015, Apple will still only hold 15.3% of the market, but Microsoft’s Windows Phone will command some 20.9% of the market at that time. The main reason for Windows Phone’s jump in market share comes from Nokia’s plan to adopt the OS as a part of their strategy moving forward.
I agree with all of the other tidbits of the report, except for the “Windows Phone” part. I’m not just saying that as a biased Apple “zealot” or something. Just look at how Windows Phone is doing- not well in terms of sales. What appears to be more important than market share in the mobile phone market as compared to the personal computer market, is mind share. Everyone knows what an iPhone is. Not everyone knows what an Android, Symbian, or yes, a Windows Phone device is.
