Lovely iOS Rumors: Siri To Be a Big Part of iOS 5

A recent article at TechCrunch – which talks about this year’s WWDC, the expected (later than usual) fall release of iOS 5, the lack of an iPhone announcement at WWDC, and more –mentions a potential starring role for Siri in any iOS 5 preview at WWDC.

A year ago, Apple bought Siri, a virtual personal assistant startup that had released a very cool iPhone app. The Siri team and technology are now said to be a big part of iOS 5.

The use of Siri’s artificial intelligence and assistance technology is said to be deeply integrated into the OS for all the different services offered. And the team is now putting the finishing touches on the elements that will be demoed at WWDC, we hear. This tech may also be opened to developers for use in third-party apps — though that information isn’t quite as concrete.

This is one of those rumors to which I want to say an immediate ‘Yes Please’. Voice Control on the iPhone has always felt lame and not worth using. Siri is far more intelligent and capable. And a version of Siri baked right into the OS – deeply integrated even – sounds superb to me. Now that smartphones are finally gaining more substantial market share, this is the sort of functionality that will keep the iPhone, looking worthy of the term.
