Internal Differences Found Between GSM, CDMA, and WiFi iPad 2 Models

iFixit has finished their teardowns of the the GSM and CDMA iPad 2 models, following their earlier teardown of the WiFi-only iPad 2 model. That said, their new teardowns only focus on the differences between the cellular models, and the WiFi-only.

The primary differences of course, is the inclusion of the 3G antennas in both the GSM and CDMA models, but even then their are minor differences between the two. The GSM model has a micro-SIM card slot that attaches right into the headphone jack cord. The CDMA model does not utilize SIM cards, and thus doesn’t have the slot.

The differences in logic boards are minor. The 3G models have an extension on the board that houses the WWAN cellular workings. The CDMA model also uses the same Qualcomm MDM6600 chip that the Verizon iPhone 4 utilizes, which shouldn’t come as a surprise.

As for the antennas, they too have minor differences. First, the WiFi Model lacks the cellular antennas that the other have. Between the GSM and CDMA models, the CDMA model has an extra antenna due to the differences in signal frequency. This is the same reason the iPhone 4 has the extra antenna gap on it.

So, there are the hardware differences between the iPad 2 models for the hardware geeks in all of us.
