Will we see an iOS version of Blackberry Messenger in April?

[Update: A few hours after I published this rumour post, it was busted on BGR. Looks like RIM is looking to bring BBM to iOS — just not on April 26.]

Rumour has it that RIM is planning on bringing its Blackberry Messenger platform to both Android and iOS, so make sure you have the phrase “BBM Me!” stored in your lexicon.

The Boy Genius Report posted the rumour a few weeks ago and a recent post by “Rihanna” on the MacRumors forum, which claims that RIM’s co-CEO basically announced a cross-platform BBM, has brought the rumour back to the front page with a release date: April 26.

I’m actually a little excited about this idea, because if it is true, it should make it a lot easier to talk to many of my BB-wielding friends. WhatsApp ($0.99) as a cross-platform messenger can be great, but it has also been quite slow as of late, so I’m eager to try out this whole messaging business that RIM is so famous for.

The only thing I’m hesitant about is the whole PIN system that BBM uses for adding contacts, but only because I like feeling like a person with a username instead of just a set of a jumble of numbers and letters. 🙂
