Digitimes is reporting that Apple is absorbing the rising costs of some components manufacturers to ensure a steady supply of part shipments. The rising costs are directly related to the upset in Japan’s manufacturing base in the wake of that country’s recent, devastating quake.
This also puts Apple’s competitors at a disadvantage if they can’t match Apple’s component price absorption, which of course means profits could be thinner than they already are for other tablet manufacturers.
The report also mentions that monthly iPad 2 shipments will remain at around 4 million units a month into Q2, and Japanese component suppliers have enough stock on hand to keep iPad 2 production running smoothly until May, but after that, there might be hiccups.
