I’ve written about both of these Mac apps before, but never really in direct relation to one another. Byword is yet another one of those minimal writing interfaces that looks cool, but which I never thought I would buy. After all, how many minimal writing apps do you need — and are you really being minimal if you buy them up by the dozen? In any case, despite my best efforts, I now own Byword and am quite happy with it. I won’t say it’s different enough from OmmWriter and Writeroom to warrant a switch and a new purchase, but it’s different enough for me to have some fun with it.
In fact, it’s thanks to Byword that I dropped a bit of cash on Hog Bay Software’s QuickCursor ($4.99), which lets you write to any text field using your text editor of choice. The latest update to QC has added support for a yet unreleased version of Byword, but when that version does come out, I’ll be able to write drafts within Byword and have the text pasted into any text field I choose, including the rather crowded one from WordPress.
The whole investment cost me only $8 (and QuickCursor can be used with other writing apps, too!).
