Apple Places Order for 12 Petabyte Storage for iTunes Content Storage

123806-isilon_systems_logo.jpgAppleInsider points to a StorageNewsletter report which claims that Apple has placed an order of 12 petabytes of storage with Isilon Systems, with the intent of storing iTunes video content. This order would make Apple Isilon’s systems largest customer, and that’s saying a lot considering they have 1500 worldwide customers.

Apple ordered as much as 12PB of capacity from Isilon Systems, notably to manage the video download of its customers using iTunes, according to an inside source of the new division of EMC.

Of course, this all rounds back to Apple’s $1 billion North Carolina data center that is due to come online sometime this spring. It has been speculated that Apple will use this to store customers’ iTunes content, and a revamped MobileMe. Specifically, it is believed that Apple is working to store users’ content, and stream it down to internet connected devices.
