Epic Games on the near-future of mobile gaming

Here’s an interesting little read about Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney and his thoughts on the future of mobile gaming. It’s not all about iOS, but he does mention a couple of interesting tidbits:

  • at 512MB of RAM, the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 have as much memory as the Xbox 360 (though the console probably runs faster and better RAM)
  • one thing that holds iOS and Android back in terms of gaming performance is the amount of available RAM; the iPad 2 will almost always have something else running, whereas consoles just run games and are more predictable when it comes to memory usage
  • Tim Sweeney believes Apple’s claim that the iPad 2 can deliver 9x the graphics performance of the iPad, meaning we could see the same high-detail shaders used in games like Gears of War on Apple’s 9.7″ screen soon enough
  • Epic chose iOS for game releases because “it’s the best place to make money”
