Here’s an interesting little read about Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney and his thoughts on the future of mobile gaming. It’s not all about iOS, but he does mention a couple of interesting tidbits:
- at 512MB of RAM, the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 have as much memory as the Xbox 360 (though the console probably runs faster and better RAM)
- one thing that holds iOS and Android back in terms of gaming performance is the amount of available RAM; the iPad 2 will almost always have something else running, whereas consoles just run games and are more predictable when it comes to memory usage
- Tim Sweeney believes Apple’s claim that the iPad 2 can deliver 9x the graphics performance of the iPad, meaning we could see the same high-detail shaders used in games like Gears of War on Apple’s 9.7″ screen soon enough
- Epic chose iOS for game releases because “it’s the best place to make money”
