HardMac is reporting that Intel will be launching the ultra low voltage Sandy Bridge CPUs, which could purportedly be used in a MacBook Air refresh.
Because of the Air’s thin form factor is so thin, it needs a lower power processor due to keep the internal temperature down. A low voltage processor does just that. When Sandy Bridge came to the MacBook Pro line, it brought with it more powerful integrated graphics (13-inch model). This appears to be the same architecture destined for the MacBook Air.
In particular, HardMac believes that Apple will use the Core i5 2537M chip used in the new Airs.
Here’s an excerpt:
Fortunately, Intel has low consumption processors, well for now, one processor, the Core i5 2537M. It is clocked at 1.4 GHz and features an impressive turbo mode reaching 2.3 GHz. It would be a huge gap with the power currently offered in the MacBook Air, even in the 13″ model. Plus the bus is now 1333 MHZ, while it is only 800 MHz currently.
This chip would make it only to the 13″ model, due to the larger size and thus greater allowance for heat. The 11″ model currently uses a 10W chip, and will likely do the same again when it sees a refresh.
There have been whispers that the MacBook Airs could see a refresh this June. This would be the first refresh for the machines since it saw a complete overhaul last October. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
