Apple Looking Into LCD/E-Ink Hybrid Displays

Another Apple patent has surfaced (via AppleInsider), this one entitled “Systems and Methods for Switching Between an Electronic Paper Display and a Video Display”, which as the name suggests, details the a way to switch between an e-ink (like the Kindle) screen and an LCD screen on the same display. This could all be controlled by the operating system, and could either switch the entire display, or just portion. Of course, the immediate application of this would be for Apple’s iBooks, wherein a more paper-like reading experience.

Admittedly, others have tried this in their own way. Barns & Nobel’s Nook has a full-color touch screen for selecting content, but an e-ink screen for reading said content.

This would be an amazing technical feat if Apple can pull it off, but I have a feeling it will be some time before we see such a display on any device available to the public.
