Two Quick iOS Contacts Tips: Phonetic Names and Initials Search

Here are two great tips that have to do with contacts on an iOS device:

The first is a fresh post from Shawn Blanc about the phonetic name fields for iPhone contacts. Basically, if you have contacts whose names aren’t easy for your phone to pronounce or understand (e.g. Ilse), then you can add phonetic first and last names that literally spell out the sounds (“eel-se”). I’m not sure if this is an Apple-only thing because I’ve never even thought to look for this field before, but it’s a good tip to know if you’re a frequent user of voice dialling.

The second tip comes from a David Pogue tweet (via Devir Kahan) and points out that you can use the search field within the Phone or Contacts apps to search by initials. So if you’re looking for your bestest buddy (ever), Thomas Wong, all you have to do is type “T W” to have the search narrow names down to names with those initials.

If you’ve got any other quick contact tips you’d like to share, hit is up in the comments.
