Apple Investigating Lodsys Controversy, More Developers Under Attack

apples-app-store-icon-o.jpgThe Guardian is reporting that Apple is investigating the situation, wherein Lodsys, a patent holding company, has been hitting small iOS developers with notices threatening lawsuit if they do not negotiate licenses in 21 days. These patents involve the use of upgrade links, and in-app purchases. They also claim Apple is prepping a statement, to be issued later on in the week.

Apple’s legal department is understood to be “actively investigating” claims by Lodsys, a patent holding company based in Texas, to have a claim against iPhone and iPad developers who use in-app purchase systems.

As previously reported, at least some developers were going to Apple for guidance on the matter, and it appears that the company is taking an active role in the situation. While that’s fine and good, more developers are coming under attack, with The Iconfactory being hit next with a notice.

It sounds like this mess is going to get a lot more complicated before it gets any better.
