Report Claims NFC Payment Capabilities Coming to Apple Retail Stores

apple-store.jpgBGR is reporting that Apple is in the process of introducing Near Field Communication (NFC) payment capabilities to their stores. Such technology would allow customers to, say, wave a hypothetical NFC-equipped iPhone at a payment station, to complete a transaction.

The report specifically mentions Apple’s iPod touch-based point of sale devices, and how they all went offline for a full day for “maintenance” recently. They also claim new hardware has been installed in the stores, and new tables, with different wiring have also been setup.

This report surfaced just one day after an analyst dismissed the idea that NFC was coming to the next-generation iPhone. This development, if true, suggests otherwise. Add this report, on top of the fact that we’ve been hearing that Apple is preparing to install new hardware, this weekend, a picture starts to form.
