EFF Puts Pressure on Apple to Support Developers Under Attack by Lodsys

apples-app-store-icon-o.jpgThe Electronic Frontier Foundation has issued a statement which calls on Apple to defend their iOS developer community against the patent lawsuit threats being made by Lodsys.

The EFF brings up an interesting point, and claims that because developers are using Apple’s tools to include the functionality in dispute by Lodsys, to their applications, then Apple should be fighting this fight. On the flip side however, in the developer agreement Apple makes developers sign when signing up to become a register developer, washes Apple’s hands of any legal dispute an iOS developer might run into.

The statement goes on to point out, what I and many others already have- If Apple allows Lodsys to get away with their trolling, it could damage the platform in general. That is, if developers are reluctant to develop for your platform due to the fear of being sued, then iOS suffers, and Apple loses money. Apple needs a strong developer community to bring more value to the platform, so in the long run, more customers chose to buy Apple’s iOS products. Economics 101.
