Newly Discovered ‘MacDefender’ Variant Intalls Without Password Input

Intego, an antivirus company, is reporting that they have discovered a new variant of the “Mac Defender” malware that has been floating around the web for the past few weeks. This variant however, does not require the input of the admin password, removing yet another layer of security from the user. The possible upside to this, is that it only installs for the current user.

This news comes right of the heals of Apple’s public statement wherein they report that a software fix, which will automatically remove the Mac Defender software, will be issued in the next few days. In the meantime, the same article gives step-by-step instructions on avoiding, or removing the malware yourself.

It is not known if Apple will address this variant in their forthcoming software fix, but users should remain suspicious at any rate.
