Apple Looking into Outdoor LCD Viewing, Sunglasses Compatible Screens

AppleInsider has found a patent application filed by Apple, in which it describes a new kind of screen that allows for viewing with the use of polarized sunglasses, something that currently can cause issues.

Looking at an LCD with polarized sunglasses on, can result in an obscured view of the display. The reason for this, is that LCD are also linearly polarized, sunglasses only allow vertical polarized light to come through. Adding both polarizers together, at certain angles, can result in an obscured view of the screen.

As for Apple’s solution, they hope to fix this problem by creating a display that emits circularly polarized light. This could be achieved by a special film across the top of the LCD. Plus, a screen emitting a circularly polarized light, would also allow for better outdoor viewing.
