Report Claims New Notification System, Widgets, Coming to iOS 5

Screen shot 2010-12-13 at 9.35.54 PM.pngTechCrunch has is reporting, that it is unlikely that Apple will be introducing any new hardware at WWDC, one shouldn’t blow off the other announcements that will likely come from the show. Most notably, they claim that Apple is working to introduce a new notification system, along with “widgets” to iOS 5.

Just the other day my colleague, Thomas, reported that Apple may have hired a member of the jailbreak community to help revamp iOS’s notification system, which has come under fire over recent years as being insufficient for the broad range of uses it’s needed for.

Also, it worth mentioning that at the start, specifically when Jobs unveiled the original iPhone in January 2007, apps like Weather and Stocks were originally planned to be widgets. This changed before the iPhone made it to market due to performance reasons. So instead, Apple released them as native apps, and not web-based widgets. This report seems to suggests however, that we will see true widgets in iOS 5, with many expecting to hear more next week at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference.
