Apple Reportedly Working on 15-inch Ultra-Thin MacBook

design_unibody2.jpgMacRumors is reporting that Apple is working on an ultra-thin 15-inch notebook. Further they report that the machine is in the late stages of testing, and it is unclear whether it will be included in the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro family of computers.

The MacBook Air’s form-factor is obviously popular, especially now that it’s entry price is $999. So popular in fact, that Apple killed off the white MacBook in favor of the MacBook Air.

It also wouldn’t be out of line to think that Apple will be adopting the MacBook Air’s design for the MacBook Pro line. Apple is clearly axing physical media- both the MacBook Air and the Mac Mini do not have optical drives, plus Apple offers the Mac App Store, for digital distribution of software.

Lastly, if this new 15-inch, ultra-compact notebook is in the final stages of testing as reported, it’s release doesn’t seem to fit Apple’s regular computer release cycles. The MacBook Pros were updated earlier this year, and the MacBook Airs just last week, and Apple usually sticks to a yearly refresh cycle.

It’s clear Apple is making in roads for the complete remove of physical media, it’s simply a matter of time.
