iOS 5 Updates Failing, Going Backup Crazy

Posted on 12 Oct 2011 by PatrickJ

iOs5UpdateError

Oops, looks like updating to iOS 5 is not going so swimmingly just now. I got the error shown above when trying to update my iPhone 4. It appears Apple’s servers are overwhelmed at least temporarily by the demand for this update, as there are plenty of folks on Twitter and elsewhere complaining about either servers being unavailable or incredibly slow updating.

Another not so nice thing about this update process is that it is forcing a backup each time you try to update. I started out this afternoon by doing a full backup and sync of the iPhone 4 just a couple minutes before trying the update. It still started its update process with a backup. I tried using the Stop button next to the backup status, but this stopped the whole update process. Then I let the backup go all the way through and got the error shown above when the update failed. And when I asked it to update again afterwards, it insisted on doing yet another backup.

I don’t recall the iOS update process being quite this dumb in the past. Despite having at least two full backups done within less than an hour from the time hitting the Update button it keeps wanting to do another. Oh, and did I mention that the backups are also, as usual, painfully slow.

I’m glad my iPad 2 already has the iOS 5 gold master on it, as it looks like the update is going to be more than a bit slow this afternoon / evening.

Good luck with yours.

    Same issue trying again

  5. Sarah E says:

Trying multiple times to update my iPhone 4. My boyfriend updated his earlier around 1:30pm (EST) and it updated it half way. He has some of the new changes, but now has no front camera nor some notifications (ex. new email). Tried calling Apple support – has over 15 minute wait to speak to anybody. I guess we’ll just have to wait a little longer… fml

  6. John says:

My Phones not updating. Its now been thrown into restore mode and will not restore. at different stages i get error 3004

    • GJE says:

I’m getting exactly the same error. I’ve also had 0xE800065 errors galore this evening. It’s getting annoying now.

Phone wouldn’t update so have tried a restore – nothing is working.

10.7.2 went fine onto my iMac. This is a PITA.

    • Darren says:

I am in the same boat. 3004. My phone does not work at all now!!!

    • Prashant says:

I had the same issue.. I did the following to get it to work.. 1. Deleted the downloaded software from “C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iphone software updates” folder, rebooted my laptop several times and then it worked !

Now, updating my wife’s phone and it went into restore mode. ARGH…

    • tom says:

I’m on my 15-20th try and it finally restored. Just keep trying. I got various errors during my attempts – 11, 3004 and 3014 were the most common

  7. Brian says:

I tried to update to ios 5 but then it failed – now my phone is showing it needs to be connected to iTunes to be restored. I try the restore, but then it fails again so now I have a brick until I can get the update. Sooo Apple, it just works?? Well, not quite… At the moment, it doesn’t work at all!!

  8. Oso says:

same thing here, back up everytime, very slow. then no update except I got error message 3014. i know there’s nothing wrong with my itunes install as my IPhone 3gs, ( yes, I’m going to get the 4s, lol ) updated with no problems.

  9. Aam says:

Same experience here minus the back up before I did the upgrade. I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow since it took almost an hour for the first time it ran a back up!

  10. PDiddy says:

I’m getting the same error as the primary author on here. It insists on doing yet-another-backup of my first-gen iPad, takes forever (but finishes downloading from the internet) and then fails with a message like “can’t restore this iPad”. If the download completes why should any of the rest of the update be dependent on Apple’s servers?

    • Oso says:

first gen ipad update attempted again, same thing you got. if the update has downloaded why does itunes need to reach the server? hmmmmmmm….

  11. Joey says:

Is the official update the same as the gm that was released a few weeks ago?

  12. Same deal here with our BMCHosting.com support team. We assume this is due to overwhelmed services. Come by and see our professional Coldfusion hosting in the meantime :)
    Cheers,
    Greg

  13. Joey says:

    Please help!

  14. PatrickJ says:

Tony and Jenn – glad you got yours done and hope you’re enjoying iOS 5.

For the rest of you, sorry to hear you’re having troubles. Mine completed on third try and lord knows how many backups. It didn’t restore all my apps back properly, but that can be fixed easily enough later on.

Joey – apparently so, but I can’t recall where I saw that referenced.

  15. nme says:

5 hours wasted trying to update iPad2 to iOS5!
    ‘Update server not available’ WTF!
Everytime I try it starts a ‘backup’ before it then fails and gives same error message as above!
    Pathetic Apple!

    • Alli says:

My 3gs has been backing up for 6 hours now… I don’t want to cancle it because I’m afriad I’ll have to start over but this is ridiculous….

  16. Glenn says:

I keep trying to update my iPhone 4 3Gs to 5 and it keeps erroring and WAAHHHH!! I hate this! I miss my dumb phone!! (well only in times like these)

  17. brendan says:

iOS failed with 3004, followed Apples help to restore, then got 3014. Now I get “update server cannot be contacted”

  18. Tim F says:

I remember it being dumb in the past, I recommend not allowing it to update until the entire file is downloaded.

  19. Dave says:

Well its 646 pm EST and I continue to receive the same error as described, You would hope that with a server farm their size they could have afforded to allocate just a we bit more poet during these releases :P

    Attempt 6….so far no brick

    Dave

  20. Dave says:

And of course this time it has worked. Always the case, make a fuss about it and it corrects.

    Good luck to everyone else.

  21. Zach J says:

If your iOS 5 update fails without an error code, follow these instructions:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097

Worked like a charm to fix my problems!

  22. John says:

After a hour at backing up iphone, eveeything stop to load..

  23. tom says:

Unfortunately its now having to restore everything on my phone. Pretty annoyed but at least my phone is working again now. Another 4 or 5 hours and I might have it backthe way it usedto be. New ios looks great though (on the plus side!) ……

  24. De1ad says:

Works fine for me. You sure your penis is alright?

  25. al says:

with Jobs gone, quality is out the door.

    • alex says:

Do you really think this isn’t Jobs? Really? Seriously? They’ve been working on this update for MONTHS, LOOONG before Jobs died. This is ALL Jobs!

  26. Bill Geimer says:

Updated mac pro and then started the iPad update – 2 hours ago. No progress reported, other than iTunes stating it was Verifying restore with Apple. Yes, quality????

  27. Brian says:

I was getting the server unavailable error. You need to just keep hitting update, on my 8th try I finally got it to install the software :) SOOOOO EXCITED. KEEP TRYING!

  28. Missing Steve Jobs already :/

  29. nick says:

been trying for 2 hours now…my phone is magically stuck in DFU and I keep getting and error code (11)????

  30. Carlos says:

I had to try more than three time. Same message: Error restoring iPhone. Reset my iMac, same error. Turned my iPhone off/on, same error. Went to take a shower came back and tried one more time it worked!!!
It has to be something related to Apple servers overloaded.

  31. Sadra says:

Managed to update iPhone 4 after 3 hours and numerous attempts. Then facebook didn’t work, redownloaded and now works, but keeps flicking off. All my music etc is GONE!!! Not that much difference for an iphone, now waiting with several attempts so far on my iPad. So far…not worth the effort!!!

  32. Christina says:

I started trying to update mine around 3pm EST.. and it took over 8 attempts and 6 hours later before it finally restored! Definitely has to do with the server being swamped! Keep trying, be patient and it will work!

  33. Fiz says:

I’m relieved to have read this, I felt like punching my computer screen when I had the same notification. I guess I just have to be patient

  34. Brent says:

AAAAGGHHH – tried the update and all went well UNTIL I got the error “cannot restore because yadyada” ALL THE DATA ON MY PHONE IS LOST!!!

  35. santos says:

mine says downloading 11 hours remaining and after 20 min it says server timed out man this is taking for ever.

  36. Stacey says:

I think my device is stucked at backing up. Does it really take a long time. Been syncing it for hours now. Is this normal?

  37. Apple can suck it says:

So I go to update for the fantastic iOS 5 right….well WRONG…..won’t update, finally got it to after hours. Than go to restore and now says I have a corrupt file and my other backups as well doesn’t work. Apple’s slogan is “It just works” right well if it did I wouldn’t have these damn problems…..DAMN YOU APPLE!!!!!

  38. Stacey says:

Pfft; I’ve tried updating my phone the past three or four updates and i keep getting the “error” or “connection timed out” when Im cfully connected to internet! Silly itunes :/

  39. Harry says:

2 and a half hours into the backup and still nothing. i cant even see how far through it is because all it shows is the green cloud thing scrolling along the bar over and over, should i stop and try again? please help? :/

  40. Kris says:

Tried the updat after updating other software including ITunes, it went painfully slow but the
    peripheral software updated ok.
I then tried to download IOS5 and got the hour meter 8 hrs. +. I went to bed and when I got up no update. I figure server overload. I will try again today.

    KEEP THE FAITH!!!

  41. ryan says:

backup so slow, it was backing up for 8 hours last night and still didnt finish D:

    • Tony says:

Got the update to the Ipad 1 to work last night/early morning! But now can’t get ICloud to activate. sigh. Worked fine after the update on the IPhone.

  42. Steve says:

I got a failure 34 message and didn’t install my music or podcasts. They don’t even show as available to manually add. So much for apple’s rep for solid software updates.

  43. tasie says:

my update keeps on saying unable to update network error please try again. i fixed the network problem and downloads 200MG and fails again

  44. Jon W says:

I fixed the problems I restarted my computer then I restored my iPhone 4 5.0 to 5.0.1 so I can use the new untethered jailbreak with the new redsn0w:):):):):):):(:):):(:):):):):):):):):
