Apple Adds GLONASS Support to iPhone 4S GPS Capabilities

Screen Shot 2011-10-12 at 10.11.07 AM.pngApple has quietly updated their iPhone 4S tech specs page and now notes that the new device can offer Assisted GPS and now, GLONASS, which is the Russian equivalent of GPS.

This is semi-impressive in the fact that Russia just two weeks ago launched their final of 24 satellites bringing GLONASS back up to full capacity. The GLONASS system lost most of it’s full operational functionality amongst Russian economic problems of the late 1990s.

Worth noting, only the US iPhone 4S page has been updated at this time to indicate GLONASS support. Also, the functionality exists for both GPS and GLONASS functionality to be used simultaneously to increase location accuracy, but it is currently unknown if the iPhone 4S can do this at this time, or if it ever will.
