Infinity Blade II (v1.0.1)

Picked by: Alex Jordan

Infinity Blade II picks up where the original left off. I have to admit, while the gameplay is fun, it’s not overly challenging, and other than the inclusion of multi-touch gameplay, really isn’t all that innovative. However, it is one of those titles that is so staggeringly beautiful that you owe it to yourself to give it a look. A lot of fit and finish went into this game both in regards to visuals and controls. Everything is responsive, which further adds to the amazement that something like this could be running on a phone.  The sequel to the original award winning epic journey continues…

The God King has been defeated, an unlikely hero has emerged and now you must discover the truth behind the secrets of the Infinity Blade. The continuing journey of young Siris unfolds as you delve deeper into the world of the Deathless tyrants and their legion of Titans. Can you unlock all the mysteries and successfully wield the power of the Infinity Blade in this timeless swordplay adventure of champions and villains?

Football Manager Handheld™ 2012  (v3.0.1)

Picked by: Patrick

Football Manager has been an obsession of mine for years on the PC. Last year I tried out Football Handheld 2011 on the iPad. At first I missed some of the more in-depth features and finer controls over things, as the iOS version was lighter and faster than the desktop version, and many things were stripped out. After a few months though I discovered I actually much preferred the iOS version. It’s far easier to dive in for 10 minutes of play, and it’s much faster.

Yesterday Football Manager Handheld 2012 hit the App Store. I’ve only been playing it for a day (with some minor interruptions for things like work, family, eating) but I can already tell you this a great new version. It’s even faster and has improved in many other ways too. The whole UI of the game now flows much more nicely. You can now tweak and control formations and tactics to a much greater degree. There’s also a new Challenge Mode with several different scenarios – a more short-term mode than the standard Career mode, where you have to pull a team out of a dire situation.

AppsGoneFree (v1.0.2)

Picked by: AliciaB

How do you discover new apps? Sometimes I need look no further than my own household. The app I’ve picked for this week came from by husband and explains why he always downloads an insane number of apps, mostly free ones. It’s aptly called AppsGoneFree by Appadvice.com, presenting you with a select and varied number of apps to check out, whose price has been slashed to zero.

AppsGoneFree gives me enough regular inspiration without flooding me with all kinds of apps I would never use. The UI is tastefully simple. If you so choose, you are notified of the latest edition of the ApsGoneFree list and you essentially have a short scroll down list with description and links to more info or to App Store. It tells you which apps are universal or not, and also gives you the rating – a handy bit of info that helps separate the sheep from the goats i.e. the apps that were  not selling well, with low ratings and thus being rightly dumped. Having tried lots of app platforms, I can say with confidence that AppsGoneFree is app discovery done well and intelligently.

Bubble Shooter Adventures (v1.9)

Picked by: AliciaB

Forget Words with Friends, Bubble Shooter Adventures is the name of a game that has me hopelessly addicted. It’s perfect for when you have time to kill, like say you’re waiting for your place to take off, er, or while in the air and you have no internet. Ehem. This was a nice recommendation from my niece, who warned me of its power to suck me in. Alas, her prediction proved to be true.

There’s not much to explain – position three in a row before you hit the bottom of the playing field  and you’re set. Clear out all the blocks and you progress to the next level. The easier levels are REALLY easy but progressing through the Hard levels are a bit more challenging. I usually get stuck on the last level but can still blissfully play for hours on this one level because this pacifies and relaxes me to no end.  No strategy involved like Angry Birds. Just a semi-focused trigger finger, directing the balls in the right place. Although the app occasionally crashes and despite the pay-to-play set up for other worlds, I give this app a thumbs up.

Flipboard (v1.7.1)

Picked by: Renkman

Finally, the moment all iPhone users who were drooling over the gorgeous interface of Flipboard have been waiting for is here!  With this week’s update, Flipboard v1.7 (recently updated to 1.7.1) is now available on both the iPhone as well as the iPad.  To be more specific, you can install it on any device with iOS 4.0 or newer installed.  That means the 3GS, 4, 4S, and iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation devices all get to experience, what up until today, was only available on the iPad.  And for being especially patient, iPhone users get to experiment with Cover Stories before it’s available on the iPad.

Cover Stories–a place to quickly catch up on some of the most interesting news, updates, and photos being shared with you right now.  The more you interact with your friends and the stries being shared, hte smarter Cover Stories gets.
