Quick iOS Tip: Dismiss iOS 5 Banner Notifications With a Flick

iOS 5 banner notifications, the wide-ish strips of text that peek out from the top of the screen, are much less intrusive than the obnoxious pop-up boxes of iOS 1–4. But even banners can outstay their welcome, especially when you’re watching a video and all the incoming text says is “Okay”.

Instead of waiting the five seconds for the banners to simply time out, you can actually quicky pull down on them long enough to activate the Notification Center, and then release to clear everything from the screen – much like the quick “flick” required to close a pair of blinds. This is one of those things I accidentally discovered during the beta, but simply never occurred to me to publish as a linked tip until I read it on Shawn Blanc’s website (though the original tip seems to have come from Chris Herbert of MacStories).
