Slide to View Notifications on iOS 5

This is another iOS 5 tip I hadn’t thought to share at first, but seeing it on Little Big Details has convinced me otherwise. Now that iOS can show multiple notifications on the lock screen, Apple has given users a little bit more power with regards to which notification they’d like to address first.

It used to be that the most recent notification – be it a text, a timer, or a Facebook alert – would dictate where you’d end up after Sliding to Unlock. That’s actually still the case in iOS 5, but you now also have the option of sliding across an icon (the ones just under the lock screen clock) to home in on a specific notification. In the screenshot above I have the choice of unlocking the phone to see my text or my Due timer.

This change rocks for two reasons: it allows users to see all of their most-recent notifications at-a-glance, and it also provides users the ability to pick and choose what to act on. If you find your lock screen is being inundated with too many notifications, remember that you can always specify which notifications show up there (Settings -> Notifications -> App Name Goes Here).
