Forget The Rumors: There Is No New iPad

Yes, you read correct – there is no new iPad.

Yet.    (Update: Of course, if you are reading this now, after the announcement, there is obviously a newly announced new iPad!)

Lest we forget the lessons of the iPhone 4S, when the media and blogosphere proffered leaks, rumors, and innuendo that had everyone expecting an iPhone 5, only to be “let down” from their preconceived notions, I wanted to take a moment ahead of today’s Apple event at which it is believed that a new iPad will be introduced that we don’t know anything yet, for sure.

Do I expect Apple to introduce a new iPad today?   Yes, I most certainly do.   Do I think that at least some of the rumored features will emerge?   Probably.   Do I think it will be everything that everyone is saying it will be?   NO.

Folks, we don’t even know the true name yet.   There’s lots of reasons to believe that it could even be the “iPad 2S”, with the true “iPad 3” “iPad HD” “iPad whatever” coming later.

So, by all means – follow today’s news.   Re-read the “What we know will be in the new iPad” lists in the blogosphere a dozen more times.   But keep in mind this: You’ve been fooled before.   Don’t set your expectations too high by looking for Apple to announce a product that has been “announced” (or merely assembled in rumorland) by everyone that’s NOT Apple.    Apple plays by its own rules, and one of them is the fact that they cannot be read like the tea leaves that so many people seem to be reading.    Not every acquisition they make, component they purchase, or supplier they are rumored to be working with immediately translates into a feature of the next new iteration of a given product.

Hopefully whatever is announced today is everything you wanted.   But don’t blame Apple if it isn’t what you might be expecting.
