The New Shorter Unlock Slider on iOS 5.1

I’m loving the new lock screen in iOS 5.1 for the iPhone 3GS/4/4S. Not only does it make the camera more accessible with a quick upward flick, but it also shortens the unlock slider, making unlocks just a little more comfortable. I was crazy for the cool factor of Slide to Unlock the first time I saw it on the iPhone 2G, but after thousands of left-to-right thumb swipes, I’ve grown a little tired of it.

I much prefer the Tap to Unlock paradign available in certain jailbreak themes, or the HTC take on Slide to Unlock (see first image), which has you sliding vertically. Either of those unlocking models is easier to activate than Apple’s current one, which requires me to keep my thumb in an unnatural position, swiping broadly across the bottom of the screen.

The only downside is that notifications bring the older, longer Slide to Unlock bar out to play, but I’ll take what I can get. Thanks 5.1.
