Review: moshi luna keyboard for Mac

The moshi luna keyboard is a full-sized, scissor-action keyboard for the Mac (and PC, actually). It features a very comfortable nine-degree tilt, chiclet-style keys, and a very dramatic illuminated design that really shines at night time.

Glowing Review

I’d say that the major selling point of the luna is its glow, which is a lot more pleasant than that of my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard. The luna’s keys are all backlit in a manner and luminosity that’s very similar to the MacBook Pro keyboard. The num, function, caps and scroll lock in the top-right are particularly awesome, since they’re completely invisible while de-activated.

Then there’s the fact that the light from the luna actually leaks out of the sides and bottom of the keyboard, framing the entire peripheral with a lunar white glow. This effect is absolutely gorgeous to behold on a desk, though I’d suggest turning it off, or at least setting it to the lowest of its four brightness settings, before heading to bed. If you sleep in the same room as your computer, the luna could well keep you up at night.

Typing

Typing on the luna feels like typing on a fresh MacBook keyboard, but for the fact that it’s just a touch easier on the fingers. The keys feel a little more even when pressed (they don’t tilt as much as my Mac keys), and the scissor-action keys respond with a satisfying little click with every key press.

Those looking to game or do some major number crunching on the luna will likely be very happy with the full-sized desktop layout. The luna has a full set of arrow keys and a numerical pad, and the whole keyboard is comfortable enough to game on for hours at a time (i.e. I used this keyboard as an excuse to play a bit of Mass Effect 3).

Concluding

I’ve used a number of illuminated keyboards before (see the aforementioned Logitech Illuminated Keyboard and the horrible Razer Lycosa), and I must say that I’ve been very happy with how the luna has performed. It’s got the comfort of my MacBook Pro keyboard, a very cool lunar glow, and the desktop layout that I need when I play games on the PC.

The only thing I might have wanted is a retractable cable, since the current USB cable is perfect for desktop computers, but a little too long for laptops. Otherwise, I think the $100 luna makes an excellent purchase, and it’s easily the best illuminated keyboard I’ve ever used.
