As 9to5Mac reported earlier this week, Apple has recently helped to create a store within a store Apple area inside a Walmart outlet in Arkansas. Apparently the concept may be coming to Walmart-owned Sam’s Club outlets as well.

I see lots of stories about Apple expanding nearly every week – stories on sales growth, bigger market share for the Mac, major new store openings in landmark buildings and famous cities, expansion into China and other fast-growing markets and so on.

This one really struck me this week though. It’s the first time I’ve found myself wondering about whether a move might somehow devalue the Apple brand. With all due respect to Walmart, which is an amazing retail (and business in general) success story, Apple products and stores have a very different image. Walmart is stack ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap – Apple is all about just making great products and beautiful environments to look at and buy them in. A typical Walmart or Sam’s Club store is about as far away from that as you could possibly get.

I think having Apple products available at these sort of retail outlets is great and helps build awareness of them and must obviously impact sales with the huge reach of Walmart. But actually having an Apple store-within-a-store at Walmart just feels a little foreign to me. I don’t want to sound like a snob here – and I definitely don’t think there’s anything wrong with Walmart. We (my wife and I) shop there at times and enjoy the bargains to be had. I just don’t see it as a great fit for an Apple retail partner. I can’t quite picture the big screen at an Apple event showing a gorgeous new Apple Store in London or Tokyo or Paris and then moving on to a next slide with the Apple Store in Walmart showed off.

What do you all think? Good move for Apple, no worries about the brand? Bad move, don’t want to see People of Apple websites? Couldn’t care less?
