Google Drive’s Lack of iOS Love = Nonsense

Google Drive

So this week Google launched what looks to be a major new product for them – Google Drive. It’s a cloud file sharing / storage solution that’s set to rival Dropbox, iCloud, Box.net, Skydrive and other similar services. It’s a rare Google product that is paid for (at all but the minimal free level).

It’s available online and on Windows PCs, Macs, and Android devices. Notice anything missing there? Oh yeah, iPhone, iPad, iOS. iPhone and iPad are listed as ‘coming soon’ at the Google Drive site.

Given that this is a big, major launch for Google I’m going to venture a guess that there are absolutely zero technical reasons why they couldn’t have iOS support ready to go on release day. Rather, I think this is just more of the Google vs. Apple bullshit little games that seem to be so prevalent these days. The other glaring recent example of this is the lack of an iPad app for Google+, the service that Google has been finding numerous creative and heavy-handed ways to ram down everyone’s throat.

I’ve said this before about the lack of a Google+ iPad app, and feel the same about the ‘coming soon’ crap with Google Drive – it’s a much bigger loss for Google than for iOS. iOS has over 600,000 apps, and easily the most compelling ecosystem for both users and developers. One less cloud file sync / storage service is no skin off the App Store’s nose. Making Google Drive far less appealing for the hundreds of millions of iOS users seems not such a clever move from the Google side – seems much more like shooting themselves in the foot.

What do you all think? Are you as sick of the stupid tit-for-tat type Google vs. Apple nonsense as I am?
