iOS 5.1.1 Released

iOS 5.1.1 is now available for download on your iPhones, iPods, and iPads via iTunes or Software Update. The download itself takes about a minute on a good connection, but the install lasts about 5-10 minutes, so be prepared. I have no issues or comments with the first three bullet points listed in the update description, but the latter two are a little personal for me.

I’ve wanted to make good use of Reading List for a while now – especially as a way of quickly sending websites to my iPad before heading out the door. Unfortunately, pre-5.1.1 versions of iOS could be dog slow about updating the Reading List, often requiring multiple restarts of Safari and several taps on the Bookmarks icon to trigger a refresh. However, as of 5.1.1, this no longer seems to be a problem. The Reading List now refreshes itself within 10 seconds of adding an item. I tried this out four consecutive times with different web pages and I’m happy to say that Reading List finally works, folks.

The final bullet point may be a more niche issue, but I’m pretty sure I’ve encountered it on my iPad 2. Basically, I’ve been seeing lots of alert boxes stating “Unable to purchase Instapaper and 9 other apps” after starting a song from iTunes Match or updating an app, and said alert box has really outlived its welcome. It’s too soon to tell whether the fix will stick, but I’m hoping that’s the issue that Apple was talking about.
