Is it a Good Time to Buy a New Mac?

Many are wondering if it is a good time to buy a new Mac. Here’s what I’ve got to say on the matter.

There is a tremendous amount of uncertainty swirling around Apple’s Mac line of computers right now. This is despite the company’s claim that they are doubling down on the Mac with major annual updates to OS X, spearheaded this year with Mountain Lion. Even so, it’s apparent Apple’s earnings reports that the Mac is no longer their cornerstone product. The iPhone and iPad are now in charge.

There have been no major Mac hardware updates and we are five months into the year. Granted, it seems that Apple is waiting on Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processors to make it to the market. Still, the Mac is stagnant, and it appears that it is slowing sales.

On the flip side, there are plenty of rumors circulating regarding the MacBook Pro line. Many believe that Apple will morph the Pro line into a more MacBook Air-like form factor. I tend to agree. I just don’t know if we will see that change with this next update. Still, a nice update is due, and now that it is this late into the year, I would wager that they introduce new Pro machines at WWDC in June. You know, an introduction in front or a Pro audience.

So, if the question on your mind, is whether it’s a good time to buy a Mac. In a word- no. It is not a good time. There is a caveat however. If you need one right now, of course, go get one. It’s not suddenly going to go bad the day after a new one has been introduced. But, if you are waiting for the latest and greatest, keep waiting, updates seem to be right around the corner.
