UniBar is one of those jailbreak tweaks that I’m really hoping will be officially implemented in iOS 6. UniBar takes the address bar and the search bar within Mobile Safari and combines them into one super bar. It’s actually very similar to what my eyebrows keep threatening to do.
I tried using UniBar on my iPhone and iPad with rather mixed results. The tweak does clean up Safari’s overall appearance, and having one bar up top does simplify browsing, but there are some graphical issues. The Safari Reader button is often positioned halfway off the screen as a result of the elongated text field, and the ‘x’ button that clears text away is simply missing on the iPad (so you have to two-finger tap to select text, and then erase it manually).
As such, UniBar doesn’t implemented well enough to feel like it’s a seamless part of the OS, and while I could e-mail the developer (Fr0zen Sun) in an attempt to get some support, I simply don’t need this feature enough to do so. That’s not to say that I’m not grateful for this and the multitude of other free tweaks on Cydia, but iOS 5 works pretty well for me on the whole, and I’m only interested in jailbreak tweaks that add functionality without the hassle of extra troubleshooting. UniBar just isn’t one of those tweaks for me right now, and so it’s no longer on my iPhone or iPad. Having a unified search and address bar is great, but I’ll just have to hope Apple eventually decides to implement it themselves.
