Today, during Apple’s keynote kicking off WWDC 2012, the company announced that Maps would be getting a significant overhaul in iOS 6. The biggest change is that Apple will be dumping Google Maps in favor of in-house technology. All cartography for these maps was done by Apple themselves.
The changes don’t stop merely with the technology powering the service. The new Maps app features turn-by-turn directions that work with Siri, local search of over 100 million businesses, integration with Yelp, crowd-sourced traffic services, and 3D maps Apple calls “Flyover”.
Arguably the most practical, and the feature I’m certainly most looking forward to, is turn-by-turn directions. This is one of those features I’m surprised wasn’t included in iOS before now. Nonetheless, I will welcome it on our family vacations where we roam around the country in a car for hours on end.
All of these improvements will ship with iOS 6, which is slated to be released sometime this fall.
What features are you most looking forward to in the new Maps app coming in iOS 6? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.
