Heck, the peace-of-mind with worth it.
I just recently went through a round of headaches with my iMac (2.5 Intel Core i5).
It just quit working one day. Memorial day. I booked a same-day Genius Bar appt. at a not-too-far Apple Store. They took it in, speculating it was power supply but considering it may be logic board. Guess what? It was the Logic Board.
Here’s the bill breakdown:
Power supply – $67.05
Logic Board – $544.32
Labor – $39.00

Know how much I paid? $0.00! That’s because I spent the paltry $130 for Apple Care. I can’t find a logic board for my iMac that costs $130. They’re all much more than that.

No burst bubbles. I know that anybody can book a Genius appointment and I know the cost of the parts ($140 for battery + $40 for install in Canada) is less than most AppleCare costs, but I’m pretty sure I got the warranty a little cheaper two years ago, and it’s also something I’d almost forgotten I had…until the battery warning came up.

You’re absolutely right: this particular use case isn’t instantly a “this one saved me money”, but it felt good to have it around. The part I’ll add now is that I’d like to buy it again next time around just in case of other failures – RAM, HDD, or worn-down keyboard keys. It was just interesting that this battery business validated the purchase a little more, and ended up being a refresh that felt free (I’d paid for AppleCare so long ago, I’d forgotten the cost).
