I take extreme care of my computers so they last a long time. However, my first laptop, a 2005 MacBook G4 finally lost its hard drive. It took awhile, but I was able to find a replacement and easily swap it out, like its battery pack 3 years ago. Runs like a brand new machine. Limited only by its processor design and availability of AC power..

Since it was a moving parts issue, I don’t anticipate a similar failure with my new MacBook Pro Retina. It is a sweet machine no doubt. But I do worry about the longevity of the batteries. They are not as impressive as they claim for length of charge. I plan on getting at least 8 years out of this machine. As long as software developments stop bricking older processors, I should be satisfied. Oh yeah, I maxxed out this machines Ram and drive space only because I couldn’t upgrade later. American debt, ya gotta love it.

Not that in both of those books, there are several mentions of Jobs’ DNA being imbedded into the company. They raise it as a question (discussing Apple’s potential long-term success) and as a goal (Jobs hoped Apple would be run better after his death than companies like HP because of how he rebuilt the company).

To me, this is an extreme example of just how imbedded Jobs’ philosophies are in Apple’s culture. He didn’t like people messing about inside Apple products. Apparently Mansfield, Ive and Cook are of the same mind.

It is disappointing, no doubt. I won’t be buying a MacBook Pro either, but if I did I’d sure like to be able to upgrade the RAM or change the SSD.
