MobileMe Grinds to a Halt, iWork.com to Shut Down on July 31st

Mobileme 500x390

Right on schedule, Apple has shut down their MobileMe cloud service, the predecessor to iCloud. Users will still be able to migrate their data from the service for “a limited time”. Apple had announced the shut down last June when iCloud was introduced.

In other ill-fated could service news, Apple has sent out emails reminding users that iWork.com is also coming to an end as of July 31st. So, as with MobileMe, if you have any data on the service that you would like to save, you have until the end of this month to migrate it off of the service.

Dear iWork.com user,

Remember, as of July 31, 2012, you will no longer be able to access your documents on the iWork.com site or view them on the web.

We recommend that you sign in to iWork.com before July 31, 2012, and download all your documents to your computer. For detailed instructions on how to save a copy of your documents on your computer, read this support article at Apple.com

Moving forward, you can use iCloud to store your documents and make them available across your computer and your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Learn more about iCloud

Sincerely,
The iWork team

I was one of the handful of people who used iWork.com. With such things as school projects and term papers, I am very paranoid. I usually print a physical copy, save the file in several locations, including an external drive, and when the service was in full swing, send a copy to iWork.com. That way, if anything happened, I could log in from most anywhere and get a copy of my work. I thought it was a nice service, and I’m glad Apple has included most of it’s functionality in iCloud.
