Outwitters is the latest title from One Man Left, the studio that brought us the excellent Tilt to Live (one of my all-time iOS favourites). But where Tilt to Live was fast-paced tactical action that stretched your reflexes, Outwitters is a turn-based multiplayer title, played locally or over Game Center.

Turns in Outwitters are asynchronous, much like a game of Words with Friends or Draw Something. What’s more, the game is universal, so you can start a match on your iPhone and then continue it on your iPad. Each turn will give you 5 wits to move, attack, or build with. You can spend this precious metal resource in one turn or wait and save up for a larger, more complex strike on the enemy base (which has to go kaboom in order for you to win).

Most of Outwitters seems to boil down to positioning: where you place your ranged units, how many beefy tanks you keep up front, and how many scouts you use to harass behind enemy lines. There are three races to play in Outwitters, but only one is available in the free version (the rest are available for $2 each, or $3 to unlock everything). Each race has unique artwork, sound effects, and a special unit: the Scallywags get artillery, the cuddly Adorables get a teleporter, and the alien Feedback get a brainwasher.

I’m really only part of the way through my first match, so I’m not in any position to review Outwitters yet. However, I can say that the level of polish I’ve come to expect from One Man Left is definitely present, and Outwitters is well worth the time it takes to download all 250 MB of this game. The only current issue is that push notifications don’t seem to be working, but they should be back to normal in a few days.
