Quick Look: Seidio Desktop Charging Cradle for iPhone 4S

The Seidio Desktop Charging Cradle doesn’t sound terribly exciting at first – it isn’t made out of aluminum, it doesn’t hold your iPhone at some funky new angle, and it’s about twice as big as Apple’s own iPhone 4 dock. What Seidio’s cradle is, however, is reliable.

For $30, you’ll be getting a neutral matte-black design that sits nicely on a desk, looking very much at home beside a MacBook Pro and iPad. The dock isn’t gorgeous, but it’s simple, handsome, and the rubber feet keep it from sliding around your desk during use. The Seidio cradle is also very accomodating of iPhones that like to wear cases or waltz around naked. I’ve tried two cases – a tight plastic case and Apple’s own Bumper – and had no problems with either one.

The cradle is suitable for use at your desk, or on your nightstand (with an included AC adapter). iPhone operability while docked is solid. The Seidio cradle supports my 4S well enough that I can push the Home button without worrying about bending the dock connector (though this isn’t quite the same with a case on).

There is really only one minor criticism here, and it has to do with size. The Seidio cradle isn’t gigantic, but it is much bigger than it probably needs to be. Seidio’s dock simply dwarfs my original iPhone 2G dock, and seeing as they both take USB input and are functionally similar, I really don’t understand why their sizes are so disparate.

I wouldn’t call Seidio’s Desktop Charging Cradle a must-have accessory, but it’s solid and affordable, and it makes for a very reasonable alternative to Apple’s own dock.
