For years Panic Inc, one of the finest purveyors of Mac software, has sold a utility called Candy Bar, which allows users to modify the OS X Dock and icons. Well, starting this week, Candy Bar has been handed off to The Iconfactory and is now a free download.
This change wasn’t made out of kindness, but rather, out of necessity. Starting in OS X Mountain Lion new security features have hindered Candy Bar’s ability to modify icons and such. For instance, indicator lights for active applications can be altered, but changing an icon on a signed app could cause the App Store to fail to deliver updates. It’s a mess.
Anyone that purchased a Candy Bar license in July 2012 can receive a refund. Personally, I never used Candy Bar, but I hate to see it go. It was, and still is, a widely used and beloved OS X application that has been with us for a long time.
It’s a sign of the times I suppose.
