Two days ago, Motion Math released a math app designed for helping pre-schoolers, primary schoolers, and early elementary students identify and add numbers in a fun, easy-to-play game. Motion Math: Hungry Guppy helps children build a strong sense of addition and what numbers represent – for example: “•••” and “3” have the same meaning.
“Hungry Guppy helps children develop three key skills crucial for subsequent math achievement: understanding numbers, the quantities those numbers represent, and basic addition,” said Gabriel Adauto, Motion Math co-founder. Research has shown that a child’s early math ability is crucial for later academic development.
Motion Math: Hungry Guppy includes:
● 15 levels that turn screen time into learning time, from levels with groups of dots to levels with numbers 1–5.
● Colors to customize your fish – as the game progresses and kids develop their addition skills, they unlock more colors.
● Fun gameplay, graphics, and music that make Hungry Guppy an experience children will enjoy for hours and hours.
As a former math teacher, Motion Math’s original fraction game impressed me greatly (reviewed here) and this weekend, my youngest son (who’s 5) and I plan to take some time to explore how Hungry the Guppy can get!
Motion Math: Hungry Guppy App is available for $2.99 from the App Store

Motion Math creates fun learning games that let kids play with numbers. The company’s first iPad app, conceived at the Stanford School of Education, made fraction estimation fun and won a Serious Play Gold Medal. A rigorous efficacy study – the first done on an iPad educational app – found the game improved test scores 15% and attitudes towards fractions by 10%. Subsequent games – Motion Math Zoom, Motion Math: Hungry Fish, Motion Math: Wings – have received rave reviews, promotion by Apple, #3 rankings in the Education category, and more than 1 million total downloads. Motion Math is backed by a world-class group of angel investors, including Mitch Kapor, Dave McClure, and Mike Wood (the founder of LeapFrog), and has been featured in TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Wired, WSJ, Forbes, PBS, Fast Company and the NYT. Most importantly: kids, parents, and teachers love Motion Math games. To learn more, visit http://www.motionmathgames.com
