Late last week a series of interesting photos claiming to be of next-generation iPhone and the rumored iPad mini components surfaced. From repair company iResQ comes photos of what is said to be the dock connector and headphone jack flex cable parts for both the next-generation iPhone and much-rumored iPad mini.
The iPad mini parts suggest that the headphone jack will be located on the bottom of this new device, which is a deviation of where the jack is located on existing iPads. This placement is also inconsistent with case leaks up to this point. So, either this part is a fake, or the cases are incorrect.
These components do seem to match the look and feel of other Apple internal components, and they appear too large to fit inside an iPhone. So, it would seem that Apple is indeed working on a smaller iPad. As if there was any doubt reaming in anyone’s mind.
Lastly, a closeup photo of the dock connector shows that this redesign will indeed only have 8 pins as has been rumored for some time. However, this connector only has pins on one side, which contradicts the other dock connector photos that recently surfaced.
In another photo leak, UBreakiFix posted a set of images which show the new, longer, 4-inch screen and accompanying bezel. As rumored, the screen does not appear to be any wider than current-generation iPhones, but indeed longer. As with other parts leaks, the area around the home button has been reduced, and the FaceTime camera relocated above the earpiece.
As for my two cents, all of these parts seem legitimate, and do not stray far from what we have been hearing in the months leading up to this point. It would seem that we could all safely bet that a new dock connector is coming to the new iPhone next month. There also seems to be a high likelihood that the much-rumored “iPad Mini” will be introduced at the same time (with new dock connector).
At any rate, both of these rumored products are expected to be announced at a media event on September 12th.
