If you’re looking to pre-order the new iPhone 5 you may want to get ready for a late night tonight. Apple has reportedly confirmed to Wired that pre-orders will start at 12:01AM (PDT) on Friday September 14. US Carrier partners are also adopting a similar approach:
Apple’s carrier partners Sprint, AT&T and Verizon have also confirmed that pre-orders will begin on early Friday morning. Sprint and AT&T will begin pre-orders at 12:01 a.m. PDT Sept. 14, while Verizon will throw open its online doors a full minute earlier at 12 a.m. PDT Sept. 14.
iPhone pre-orders typically see Apple’s servers (and those of their carrier partners) get hammered right away and it can be extremely difficult to get a pre-order placed if you’re unlucky with your timing.
One thing I’ve seen a lot of people have success with on these occasions is using the iOS Apple Store app on an iPhone or iPad to place a pre-order. I’ve done this myself one time in the past and found I was able to get the order placed successfully via the app when it was impossible to get it done online.
I’ve also found today in poking around Apple’s online page for the iPhone 5 pre-orders that their popover window to check upgrade eligibility with AT&T (to get a decent price) is broken – it needs you to enter a 10-digit phone number but only allows for 8 digits to be entered – at least in my Chrome browser. The eligibility check works fine for me in the Apple Store app, and sadly reveals no nice upgrade price for me this year:

Good luck to all.
