Perhaps the pundits are assuming (with good reason) that pre-orders may not have all shipped on time (items usually charged for when shipped not ordered thus not yet considered ‘sold’) and thus did not include them in the first weekend count. Reports of 2-3 week wait times for the iPhone5 for online orders soon after the initial hour of pre-orders gives good weight to this theory. With the recent announcement today of Foxconn shutting down temporarily to clean up riot damage it may have a big impact on near future iPhone inventory and iPhone sales totals. It is also quite possible that quite a few pre-orders were cancelled since they were ‘back-up’ if the customer could not buy them at a physical store in the past few days.
