Report Claims that Apple Sourcing Carbon Fiber Components for Upcoming Products

Macotakra is reporting that they have received information claiming that Apple and Foxconn are working together to source parts (currently not known what that might be) from companies specializing in carbon fiber.

This rumor has been circulating for some time now, but of course, has yet to come to market. As far back as four years ago, there were rumors that Apple is working on a carbon fiber MacBook Air. Patent applications have since surfaced showing that Apple is indeed looking at carbon fiber as a material to build products with.

Apple even hired Kevin Kenney as senior composites engineer, which further fuels speculation that Apple is looking for new materials to build their products with. Kenney had been the CEO of Kestrel Bicycles, the people who have lead innovation regarding carbon fiber bicycle frames.

Make of this what you will. I think Apple seriously looking into new materials, mostly likely carbon fiber. I do wonder how carbon fiber will look, from an aesthetic standpoint. It’s certainly light enough and strong enough to do what Apple needs.
