I don’t usually consider an app update worthy of a separate post but last week’s Hipstamatic update made a giant leap forward on the road to perfection.
I mean it was already pretty appealing, just about fulfilling its goal of being a one stop “analog” camera app – forsaking cheesy effects or tedious filters for analog films, lenses and flashes as well as building a brand and popular community to boot. But I had not kept the camera app on my radar – mainly for three key reasons 1) I could never remember which films, lenses and flashes did what 2) I felt the app was so obsessed with authenticity I didn’t see the point of it taking artificially long to process the pictures you took or making the viewfinder extra small 3) the UI was unnecessarily unwieldy e.g. too many taps were required to change films. These needs have been largely addressed in this and previous updates, making the overall user experience much more enjoyable.
Trying it out last week while on an outing through museums in Vienna, I was happy to discover that processing images are now instantaneous and that a simple double click on the viewfinder doubles its size (tapping once again takes the picture – sweet!).
Memorizing combinations and effects is made easier by saving “favorites” and when you hit the star to access your list, there are samples of pics you took with the setting. The app makers have also included little pop up hints to inform/remind you of what does what.
The app now sports performance improvements as well as additions: an improved flash slider and a Multi-Exposure Kit and has now been readied for iPhone 5 screens. Throw in a few new cases and you have a solid update to an already solid app. Thanks to the hard working people in Hipstaland, I’ve moved Hipstamatic back onto my “to use regularly” list.
