MacRumors is reporting that several of their readers have seen their orders for the recently-announced fifth-generation iPod touch and seventh-generation iPod nano begin to ship. The delivery timeframe falls between sometime late this week and early next week. So, it would seem that an official launch is imminent.

On the more technical side of this story, Macotakra has posted unboxing and comparison photos of both the new iPod touch and iPod nano. They also conducted some benchmark testing on the new iPod touch and found that the device has performance very similar to that of the iPhone 4S (both devices are powered by the A5 chip).

In short, everything is exactly as we expected it to be. The new iPod touch is as powerful as last year’s iPhone 4S while being far slimmer, and both the new iPod touch and iPod nano are shipping right when many media outlets expected them to. Now the only product we’re really waiting for that was announced at last month’s media event, is the new version of iTunes. With the new iPods now shipping, I would expect Apple to release the new iTunes imminently.
