Review: BugMe! For PalmOS (oops) iPhone & iPad

Sorry, I just can’t help myself. You see, when I had a Treo, BugMe! was one of those applications that made life so much easier to manage. It was the crème de la crème of note-taking and reminder applications. So it is with a heartfelt sigh of nostalgia that I delve into the evolution of BugMe! – now for iPhone and iPad.

At its heart, BugMe! is a sticky note corkboard onto which you can post, well, sticky notes – but these are no ordinary sticky notes. You can place both drawings and text in several different colors (and on several styles of paper, some with helpful stamps on them).

What makes this different from other note taking applications is that you can also set reminders on your sticky notes, making the whole affair something of an Evernote-cum-Reminders; and when it’s time, BugMe! will, well, bug you. Moreover, it will bug you with an alarm that will not go quietly into that good night of two alarms and thereafter silence, as most alerts in iOS do. No, BugMe! will demand your attention – and get it.

CREATING NOTES

A simple tap of a “+” icon opens up a default sticky note on yellow paper with a variety of tool icons on the bottom. From here, you can draw or write on the sticky note, enter text, and change the color of the text/drawing. All of these functions are pretty much as you’d expect, but you also can change the text font from a small set of pre-programmed font choices, and you can also change the text size. The one thing that I wished I could do was to move the text on the note. Sadly, it stays at the top.

More interesting is your ability to change the sticky note paper, export your note in a variety of different ways, or set an alarm.

CHANGING PAPER

BugMe! comes by default with 18 different paper styles (more are available via in-app purchase), and cleverly, they allow you to take a picture (or use one in your camera roll) as the paper.

EXPORTING

You can export your notes in a variety of interesting ways. Along with the now-standard email, Facebook, and Twitter, you can also save the note image to your home screen, or as your wallpaper, or as someone’s contact picture. (“Jim owes me $5”, perhaps?)

SAVING TO YOUR HOME SCREEN

Saving the note to your home screen involves uploading it to BugMe!’s server, then downloading it via Safari. The picture is then deleted from their server. Tapping on the icon will open the note as a picture. Tapping the picture will open it in the BugMe! app.

ALARMS

Making gorgeous sticky notes is just the half of it, however, as each note can be made into an alarm. When setting an alarm, you have quick settings such as “Top of the Hour”, “One Hour”, “Tomorrow Morning” and “Next Week”. You can also select a custom time much as you do with iOS Clock Alarms. And when it’s time to chime, BugMe! lives up to its name by chiming until you shut it up.

THE BOTTOM LINE

BugMe! is a great little app that offers you a creative way to remember and to be reminded of things. If you loved it on PalmOS, you’ll fall in love all over again on iOS.

BugMe! for iPhone and iPad is available for $1.99 in the App Store. Additional types of sticky paper are available for 99 cents per package via in-app purchase.. They are not required to use the app.
