Three reasons why I would buy an iWatch

Apple is unique among technology companies in that their extreme secrecy creates a large buzz around products that haven’t even been announced.  No other company gains as much free attention and press as Apple does from product rumors, debates and discussion about upcoming products, and excitement about what the next release will be.

After watching Samsung’s somewhat awkward unveiling of the upcoming Galaxy S4, I was reminded why Apple still has to be considered the king of technology.  Their ability to control the press and create buzz around products before and after release is still unmatched in the business.

One product that is currently receiving a lot of buzz and rumors is an Apple iWatch.  Anyone who has followed Apple T.V. set rumors knows that these rumors often turn into nothing.  However, I do feel that, in the case of an iWatch, Apple has the potential to release another product that will be a big hit and define a product category.

I, for one, would be thrilled with an iWatch.   The following three possibole benefits of owning an iWatch excite me.   These benefits all assume (dangerously) that some of the rumored features are real, but they are exciting to think about none-of-the-less.

1. Information at a Glance for Busy People

As a principal and teacher my days are incredibly busy.   I often don’t have the time to check messages on my phone or computer during the day because there is rarely a free moment during my workday.  This has often led to me missing important email messages, phone calls, or text messages from my family members or school parents.  I too often fail to feel the buzzing of my phone in my pocket, or if I am incredibly busy,  am not able to pull it out to look at the reason for the alert.   This leads me to forget an alert ever sounded and I fail to check the message or call till it is too late for it to matter anymore.

I would love the ability to have alerts right on my wrist to glance at really quickly.  This would help me, even during the busiest parts of the day, to quickly know if there is an important message or phone call that I need to attend to.  I would not have to stop what I am doing to pull a phone out of my pocket, but could go right on working without missing a beat if the alert isn’t something urgent or needing attention right at that moment.

2. Reminders at the Wrist

In my workday, there seems to be countless things for me to remember to do.   These can range from errands to run at home, people to call or speak to, bills to send in, or tasks to complete.  I often set alerts on my phone to remind me of these important tasks.  Unfortunately, as mentioned above, I often don’t hear the alerts or feel the buzzing of the phone within my pocket to have my attention drawn to them.

A small vibration at the wrist would be impossible to miss.  Suddenly, there would never be the possibility of forgetting an important task ever again!  If a reminder is set, I know I will see it at the appropriate time later on.  This would take a burden off of my mind of trying to remember all that needs to get accomplished each day.  Having Siri integrated right into the watch would make setting reminders, tasks, and appointments a super easy and powerful feature to have available instantly right at my wrist.

3.  Quick Actions to Organize Your Life

I’m someone who really likes to stay on top of things and feel like I am organized and in control.  One of my least favorite parts of the day is sorting through my email box at the end of a busy school day of all the messages that backed up during my day of teaching.

How awesome would it be to be able to organize email and other messages with a quick flick of a button on the iWatch as they arrive during the day?  I imagine the iWatch buzzing with an incoming email and then offering buttons to quickly archive, delete, or send the message to a specific folder.  Being able to handle incoming messages as they arrive in split seconds throughout the day would save me from having to spend the time sorting through all alerts and messages at the end of the day.

Rumor or Real Product?  I’m Hoping for the Former

Whether or not the iWatch ever makes it to market, I’m excited for the possibilities and the research now being done into similar products by many different companies.  Just the buzz and excitment created by the rumors of an iWatch has forced many companies such as Sony and Google to look into the product category themselves.  I see only good coming from this.  Whether Apple brings the above listed dreams of a smart watch to life or if other companies take the lead with smart watches, it is clear at least some of the major technology companies are serious about the product category.  This can only be a good thing for technology crazed people like me.

I’m already sold on the idea.  Somebody please just take my money!
