As much as I love my iPhone, I have to admit that the openness and creativity of the Android world has always intrigued me. Never enough to make the switch, but definitely enough that it’s always in the back of my mind if need be.
Facebook’s popular new feature, Chat Heads, is the type of feature I wish all of us in the iOS world could enjoy. Android users love the feature, but Apple users can only enjoy it within the steel confines of Facebook’s app, which pretty much defeats its intended purpose.
Developer Adam Bell agreed with me, apparently. Fortunately for the rest of the Apple universe, he is clearly a hell of a lot smarter than I am. According to the Verge, he has successfully developed a way to get Facebook Chat Heads to work throughout the entire iOS. According to Bell, the tweak took only a few hours to create and is not very resource intensive at all, stating that Chat Head isn’t really doing anything unless you’re moving them around the screen.
The Verge has confirmed that the hack does successfully run on a jailbroken iPhone 5. The tweak is not perfect, however. It does occasionally freeze, possibly due Apple limiting the duration of time that apps can run in the background. It’s due to launch on Cydia and Github in a few days, but Bell hopes to have the issue fixed by then.
My favorite part of the story is the revelation that it might be possible to integrate SMS and iMessages as well. I’ve never been that interested in jailbreaking, but this possibility definitely piques my interest. I just hope that Apple takes note of this popular feature and considers something similar for the next iOS update.
