Review: Satechi LED Desk Lamp: An effective desk lamp and handy iPhone accessory

DeskLamp

As a teacher who does a lot of desk work, I have tried a few different desk lamps on my desk while looking for the best way to light up my work.  None of the lamps I have tried have actually lasted more than a couple of weeks because they can be awkward and take up valuable desk space or just aren’t effective at bending to positions that give me the light I need while not getting in the way.

When I was offered the chance to review the Satechi LED Desk Lamp, I was intrigued by its minimal size, its extreme flexibility, its slick aesthetics, and most of all by its handy USB port.

The USB Port

The idea of marrying a desk lamp with a USB port honestly had never entered my mind before reviewing this lamp.  The idea makes so much sense, and I love how easy it is to fuel up my smartphone right at my desk without having to reach behind my desk to plug in a charger in the nearest wall outlet.  This USB port also makes it easy for my smartphone to sit right on my desk while charging.  This keeps it easily accessible for making or receiving calls and texts while it fuels up.  This feature, alone, puts the lamp a step above anything else I have tried on my desk in the past.

I would even consider using this as a night stand lamp as the USB port would also be an effective solution for plugging in my smartphone at night.   Some of its light settings (which I’ll cover more in depth later) are also great for relaxing or reading in bed.

A Slick Design

In my opinion, most desk lamps are ugly, space eating eyesores  on your desk.  The Satechi LED Desk Lamp does not fit this description.  It’s thin and minimal design does not eat up desk space.  It comes in two classic Apple colors – shiny black or shiny white.  The shiny black model that I reviewed looks great on my desk.  Finally, its ability to twist in all different directions and fold up to a very small size makes it valuable when light is needed, and easy to get out of the way when not in use.

A Plethora of Lighting Options and Customization

The Satechi LED Desk Lamp has a very slick and easy to use touch control pad on its base that offers a wide variety of lighting options.  There are buttons that activate Reading Mode, Study Mode, Relaxation Mode, and Bedtime Mode.  Each of these modes changes the intensity as well as the color temperature.  The reading and study modes, for instance, have a bluer color temperature and brighter light settings, while the relaxation and bed time modes have a more orange color temperature and are quite a bit dimmer.

In addition to the different modes, the lamp also offers controls for brightness so that you can further tweak the four main modes.  A timer mode is also available that automatically shuts the lamp off after one hour.  This is great for anyone who likes to fall asleep while reading in bed.

A Highly Efficient, Flicker Free Lighting Solution

One of the other noteworthy features of this lamp is the fact that it does not use a traditional light bulb.  Instead it uses rows of LED lights that consume less power and are not prone to flickering.  According to the manual, the bulbs in this lamp should last up to 40 times longer than a traditional light bulb or up to 22 years if used about 5 hours per day.  In my experience with the lamp, I did enjoy the steady, bright lighting that it provided on my work and while reading.

Verdict:

Pros:

+ A slick, eye catching design that doesn’t eat up desk space or get in the way
+ A wide variety of light customization options useful for many situations
+ A very useful USB port for charging your devices right at your desk
+ Well designed touch pad for adjusting the light modes

Cons:

– Prone to showing finger prints and dust (especially the black model I reviewed)

If you are looking for a great desk lamp or nightstand lighting solution and you also are a smartphone owner, the Satechi LED Desk Lamp will give you great lighting versatility and while also providing you with a handy USB port.
