T-Mobile is out with its earnings report for the first quarter of the year and just as expected, the iPhone 5 is already making a splash in the numbers. Officially launched on April 12th, TMo has already managed to move 500,000 units. For a smartphone that has been widely available since last fall, that’s quite an impressive take for the first month on the carrier.
Overall, T-Mobile added 579,000 new customers combined between its branded, unbranded, and MVNO offerings. Despite this, revenues continue to slide. For Q1, the company saw a net income of $107 million, down from $200 million for the same period last year.
It will be interesting to see the continued effect of iPhone sales on T-Mobile’s bottom line, but the latest Apple handset will need to get a few more months under its belt before that data becomes meaningful. T-Mobile is hoping to turn around its fortunes with their new “un-carrier” program, which ditches traditional mobile contracts and subsidies in favor of simplified service options and payment plans for new phones.
